I've been lighting firecrackers off my whole life. But if I did, I hope I never see that son-of-a-bitch bring his firearm to a LAN party again. Party is ruined and many people have ringing in the ears for a while. The guy who fired the gun will inevitably repeat he had no idea it was loaded, or maybe that it was a real gun. People start asking why the gun was loaded. Usually one person gets dramatic and starts making the entire scenario into something that could have personally killed them, or less importantly, someone else or even the surrounding tech equipment. Hot tempers flare as people dealing with the scare and potential death start barking argumentative statements. Then there's an assessment of damage, followed by a speculation of what happened, and then inevitably someone overreacts and shouts at the person who accidentally (we hope) discharged the gun.

Then 2-4 people (usually guys) all start barking conflicting orders before one dominant voice calms everyone down. A gun going off in an enclosed room is scary as hell, because there's the BANG, simultaneously followed by the sound of whatever it hit breaking (like, say, a fluorescent ceiling fixture), and then the sharp burning smell of gunpowder which happens right around everyone in the else starts shrieking and screaming. It's almost surprisingly loud if you're not used to it (or usually wear ear protection at shooting ranges). Loud as hell in an enclosed space, loud as heck in an open space. Some rifles have distinctive sounds (an Kalashnikov sounds different than an AR-style rifle, for example) and I can generally distinguish rifle fire from shotgun fire from pistol fire.but again, not always. I can usually tell just based on my own internal 'database' of firearms sound built up from years of shooting different kinds of firearms with different kinds of ammunition in different kinds of settings, but not always.

I've been shooting my entire life and there are times when I'll here a crack outside and not be 100% sure if it's one or the other (I live in an area where gunfire isn't common, but it's not unheard of either). The main difference is that firecrackers typically aren't fired off inside a metal tube, which changes the sound some.

Plus a shotgun doesn't sound like a pistol, and pistols sound slightly different from each other.ДЇrom a basic standpoint though, a gun sounds a lot like a firecracker. It's unlikely you'll find a recording that sounds anything like what you'd hear if you were sitting at home and someone was firing a couple blocks away (or right outside for that matter). Gunfire sounds different if you're up close, or at a distance, or inside your house.
